Services - Piano Tuning & Repair
| |
The piano contains more than 250 strings held under very high tension. It is recommended to attend to its servicing as you would with any other major purchase, such as a car. We suggest a maintenance schedule to keep your piano in good shape.
What is tuning?
Tuning adjusts the tension of each of the piano strings using a tuning hammer until each string sounds pleasingly in harmony with every other string according to certain known acoustical laws.
Why do pianos go out of tune?
By far, the most important factor is the change in seasonable humidity, affecting all pianos (good & bad, new & old, played & un-played). The soundboard, glued down around the pianos perimeter, collects moisture. This moister is pushed up on the strings via the bridges, causing them to be stretched at high tension, raising their pitch. In the dry season, the opposite occurs.
How often should I tune my piano?
We recommend you tune your piano no less than every six months.
What kind of skills are required to tune a piano?
Piano tuning is a very complicated process and takes a lot of training and skill. Our piano technicians are members of the "RPT" (Registered Piano Technician).
